Getting Under Your Skin: Sensitive Sunscreen

Most people recognize that sunscreen is something that everyone should have in their cupboard. Any time you spend a lot of time outdoors during peak hours for the sun (between 10am and 4pm) you should protect your skin from ultraviolet rays which can cause sunburn and long term damage to your skin.

For most people the hardest thing to decide is what SPF they want to purchase, or whether they want gel, spray or stick. Others value natural products and want an organic sunscreen. Still others have sensitive skin and need to avoid as many chemicals that might irritate their skin as possible.

For those with skin sensitivities, sensitive sunscreen is a must. Sunscreen and sunblock contain many different ingredients that are used to absorb or block the UV rays and many of these are chemicals that can be irritating to delicate skin.

Of course, if your skin is sensitive it is more likely to be prone to burn easily, which means that having sunscreen may be even more important than for other people. But you don’t want to cause a burn before you even go out in the sun with the chemicals found in the wrong kind of sunscreens!

Most sensitive sunscreens will be fragrance free. Ingredients that add a pleasant smell to products are usually made from chemicals that can cause irritation when absorbed in the skin. When this is left out, that is one ingredient that will not be there to cause problems.

Natural ingredients are usually more likely to be gentle to the skin, so sensitive sunscreens are likely to contain natural ingredients. However, just purchasing a sunscreen labeled ¡°natural¡± may not be good enough. You need to search for sensitive sunscreen.

Some of the best sun blocking ingredients also happen to be non-allergic. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two ingredients that are completely photostable (meaning they don’t break down in the sun) and also provide the best protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

The reason these compounds are so good for sensitive skin is because they are not actually absorbed into the skin. This means that the skin will not react to it, as it just rests on the top of the skin. From there it can block out UV rays without bothering your skin.

Sensitive sunscreen is made by many different companies. Most brands that have a wide range of sunscreen products will also carry a sensitive version. These are best for those with sensitive skin including children.

If your skin is prone to irritation you definitely don’t want to deal with having a sunburn. It might be even more painful for you than for other people. Wearing a good quality sensitive sunscreen can save you from all kinds of problems with your skin, both those induced by chemicals and fragrances as well as those that come from overexposure to the sun.
